Emmanuel 2006

30in x 27in

Acrylic on Canvas

Collection:Svenska Kyrkan, Sweden

'Emmanuel' is a painting depicting the incarnate Christ in his infancy striking a 'crucified' posture as a prophetic sign of his coming redemptive calling. As the Savior for all mankind, I placed him in an Asian context as a Chinese in a Malaysian 'tikar' leaf mat. I employed symbolism such as 1)Christ sleeping in a sheepskin robe - the Lamb of God 2) Christ's left hand grasping the robe red string as a reminder of God's covenantal promise to Rahab of Jericho. 3)His right hand is pointing at a Chinese opera mask of the righteous Judge Bao- proclaiming himself as the righteous Universal Judge. 4) Below Christ's feet is another operatic figure of Loh Si Fu (Four Tigers Loh), the villian who always speak lies - hence the inverted position with the cracked lip. I thus chose him as a symbol for Satan whom Christ identified as the 'Father of Lies' -Jn8:44. Overall the composition follows the approach of the European Medieval tradition eg Duccio 's Victorious Christ descending into Hell c.1308

This work was painted during my student days when
I have to save whatever money to buy painting materials.
Those were the days when a piece of roti canai cost 20cents
and a plate of fried 'hokkien' noodles cost 50cents.
Mostly lunch and dinner consisted of 2 pieces of roti canai and
a bowl of foc. curry soup thrown in.
Happy days of course is all about the opportunities to paint and paint.

Homage to Rubens(Daniel in the Lions' Den-1615)
1974
11.5inx14.5in
Watercolor on Paper.
One of those assignment where a detail analysis of a masterpiece is done
to unlock the 'secrets' of its enduring impact on the viewers.
I completed it in 4 months. I attempt to reinterpret this great masterpiece to
reflect the 'quick-paced' lifestyle that I felt was fast approaching around the corner.
long later the advent of the desktop computers ( Commodore & Atari costing over rm10,000) was to change forever my lifestyle.

Acrylic on Canvas
This painting follow the mannerism of the traditional Icon artists in particular the stark golden background emphasizing the holy ascent intended. The 'crown of thorns' enveloping the body expresses my felt experience during the period of recuperating from barricade treatment of my eyes due to retinal breaks. The rainbow sign of the Noahic Covenant which is constantly featured in my art is again present beneath the golden background, the pupil and among the thorns. a reminder of Christ's compassion and fellowship with his beloved.[Isaiah 53] ... It is not the pain that is bearable but the companionship that bears the pain.
